Torque
Turn Subs

How do you ensure a top drive is providing the correct torque?
McCoy Global is proud to be the world leader in Wireless Torque & Tension Sub (TTS) Technology.  With units deployed since 2006 that are still in service today, no one else has the experience or installation base of McCoy Global. We continue to lead with our Enhanced Torque & Tension Sub, featuring integrated turns.  This system supports torque-turn control for casing-running joint validation, using top drive or casing running tools.

A torque turn sub is screwed into the top drive and runs while you are actively running your service.  It measures torque, tension (hook load), turns (rotation), vibration, acceleration, deceleration, and RPM.
Why is this important to measure? Inaccurate torque, tension, or turns being delivered from the top drive result in:

  • Damage to pipes
  • Twist-offs due to over-torque
  • Dropped strings causing fishing / non-productive time
  • Damage to drill bit (overheating or breaking up)
  • Damage to drill string caused by stick-slip
  • Bit change runs

This is caused by incorrect system settings, equipment issues such as leaks, oil contamination, faulty hydraulic motor or power unit, or Irregular maintenance.
The solution is a McCoy Global torque / turn monitoring system:

  • Measure RPS, hook weight, and weight on drill bit
  • Measure in real-time so that driller can instantly adjust top drive settings
  • Deliver data wirelessly to any Windows-based laptop, desktop or tablet
  • Establish maintenance programs to regularly verify torque output
